Lyft’s self-driving cars will be launched by 2025

Lyft tries to balance its competition with its long-term competitor Uber. The CEO of Lyft, Mr. John Zimmer, published the vision of Lyft for the next 10 years and above.

 

 

In the post he explained how to bring out the self-driving cars in three phases. In which, the first phase will be available by 2017.

 

 

The first phase will constitute the semi-autonomous cars. The semi-autonomous cars will be accessible to the Lyft users, but these cars will not be available on all the routes, they are permitted to drive only in the fixed routes, which the technology is guaranteed to navigate.

 

 

General Motors invested $500 million with Lyft for the exchange of 10% stake and also to take the agreement to form a network of the self-driving cars together.

 

 

The second phase constitutes the self-driving cars, which are permitted to navigate more than the fixed routes, which means that, the route limit will be extended, but they will drive only 25 miles per hour.

 

 

With the improvements in technology and by introducing new mature software; the cars will start to move faster.

 

 

The third phase is expected to be introduced by 2021 or 2022. The third phase happens when all the Lyft’s semi-autonomous cars becomes the fully autonomous vehicles. When the third phase begins, the car ownership will experience a little drop off, and then they will try to narrow the path of the fully autonomous vehicles.

 

 

The CEO of Lyft, Mary Barra, said that, the car ownership may about to fall as there is an uncontrolled growth in the shared networks, but sometimes this progress may also down the road.

 

 

They expect the fully autonomous vehicles to be first introduced in the shared model and there will be an individual owner also. So, the company is working on both.

 

 

In the beginning of 2016, Lyft was seen as the major competitor for General motors. Tesla’s CEO, Mr. Elon Musk, said that, Tesla would operate a shared a network in the future and many owners will allow the strangers to pay and use their autonomous cars. Musk initially did not convince with the car-sharing technology is the way of the future, later, Zimmer explained musk about the importance of the shared network in cars. Zimmer was not satisfied with the Musk’s vision for the future, then he had another vision towards the future.

 

 

Now-a-days, people own cars, Lyft surroundings predict that, in five to ten years, both the autonomous cars and the human driven cars will ride in the streets.

 

 

Zimmer says that, in the next five years there will be a great demand for the Lyft drivers. The logic he follows is simple, when Lyft introduces the self-driving cars, the cost of the rides will become low, which in turn increases the demand for the Lyft rides and many people will start to prefer Lyft.

 

 

Autonomous cars are only the portion of the Lyft’s raid hailing services; drivers are needed to provide the other services. So drivers need not worry about losing their jobs. When the company began subsidizing the rides, they cost $5 to $10 for a ride, as a result of this, the demand increased, and the company had the idea of about how the demand can increase and jump if any changes have been introduced in the routine work.

 

 

The Lyft’s autonomous driving network will not work in the same way as Lyft works at present. Instead, Lyft is going to follow the way of Netflix and Amazon Prime; it is going to introduce the monthly subscription packages, this feature allows the users to pay as you go, which is, the users can pay a few cents per mile or the users can buy some amount of miles for the month. Hence, transportation becomes a kind of a utility.

 

 

Lyft’s self-driving cars will be launched along with the launch of many competing companies’ self-driving cars, such as, Uber and nuTonomy. It looks like the request to the regulators to begin to think about how the autonomous technology will impact the cities and the way they operates.

 

 

Many people who grow in cities, would have seen their cities with full of automobiles, but how would they feel if they take all the cars off the road. In the same way there will be a less traffic and less pollution, there will be a less demand for the parking places, so that the sidewalks can be widened and the streets can be lengthened or narrowed, houses can be built and small business can be started or these spaces can be converted into the parks and the green spaces. The world is built for the people not for the cars.

 

 

The cities are designed around the cars. Whether is it possible to get back all the spaces or they will be occupied by the garages or the gas stations. But it is not enough to imagine a city with parks and pedestrians with the free space; something should be done with the free space, so the plan for that has to be started.

 

 

Zimmer said that, the design of the cities is related to the economic, social equality, environment, health and the quality of life. But the issue is, not enough time is spent on, how to improve the city better. 

 

 

The society is at the situation of fork in the road, it is at the confusion to choose which direction, but the decision to take the right path is unavoidable. The decision must be taken by all the people of the city that is by all business leaders, city planners, policy makers and the citizens. This helps to find the full potential of the city and this will also be the unheard movement in history.

 

 

Pros of the self-driving cars

 

  • The computers are the ideal motorists. About 80% of the car accidents are the outcome of the human error, whereas, the computers can take the dangers out of the equation.
  • Computers use the powerful algorithms to find out the stopping distance, distance between the other vehicles and many other data, which in turn decreases the possibility of accidents.
  • Computers cannot be diverted, being diverted easily is one of the major reasons for the accidents.
  • It is not sure that, to what extent lives could be saved. But in manual accidents the loss could be higher.
  • The self-driving cars would reduce the traffic in the cities and they will also reduce the commute time for the passengers.
  • Disabled people should depend on the public transport or they get help from others to get inside, but self-driving cars helps them with the increased mobility and new freedom.
  • Higher speeds are supported by the self-driving cars. Computers calculate the safety and the speed. Increasing the speed will not affect the safety in the autonomous cars.
  • Most of the companies are interested in the new product development and they are willing to take the industry to the next level possible, in account of this, self-driving cars are appreciated by many automobile companies.
  • Accidents due to drink and drive will be stopped, because there will be no driver inside the car.
  • Less parking spaces and the parking problems will be decreased.

 

 

With the big thinking about the self-driving cars, it is important to recollect, autonomous cars were the matter of debate a decade ago, but now, plans are going on to implement the self-driving cars. They have become the fact of inevitability.
