How to Repair WinSock Errors

Easily Repair WinSock errors.

Winsock is basically a Windows specification used to determine how the various network applications communicate with the network service, such as TCP/IP. It determines how the two network programs will communicate with one another. For example, an FTP client will have to use Winsock in order to work.

However, the Winsock protocol is not without its issues as it’s highly susceptible to viruses and adware. When a computer system becomes infected with a virus, it can manifest itself in the form of unusual errors relating to the Winsock. The user may also not be able to access the internet.

In order to correct this problem, there are several things that the end user can do. Many of which I hope to explain in this article.

What Causes These Errors?

Besides the odd viruses or two, there are also many other mishaps on your computer that can lead to a Winsock error. Of these various causes, the most common are as follows:

  • The Windows registry has been corrupted.
  • A hardware component has failed.
  • The computer system has run out of resources due to an excess number of applications running on it.

That said; the various ways of fixing this problem are as follows:

Reset TCP/IP Network Stack

If you encounter a Winsock error, the first thing that you should do is reset the TCP/IP network stack. To do this, simply do the following:

  1. First, boot into your computer system with an administrative user profile.

  1. Then press Windows Key + R, this will open the Run Command Box, then type cmd into it and click on OK.

Use System Restore

If the above method fails to fix the problem, then you may want to consider using System Restore. If you don’t know what System Restore is, it’s essentially a built-in Windows feature that allows you to restore your system back to a previous state. So in the case of this Winsock error, you could, theoretically, restore your system back to a period before you started to encounter the errors.

You can access this program in the System Tools folder.

Update Your Drivers

The Winsock errors on your computer may have occurred because of a driver problem. In order to rectify this issue, you will need to update the drivers for your network device(s).

You should be able to find the most up-to-date drivers for your computer on its official website.

Use Microsoft Fixit

Because of how common this occurrence is on their operating systems, Microsoft has created their own tool for repairing Winsock errors. The user need only download and run the correct Microsoft Fixit application, and then restart their computer to fix the problem.

Microsoft’s support page is the best place for you to start, to locate the correct Microsoft Fixit.

Use Winsock XP Fix

Winsock Fix is a freeware program that was created specifically for repairing internet connection issues. If your corrupted internet connection is due to issues within the registry, then this tool will fix it.

This tool is also capable of backing up the registry prior to making any changes to your system. So there is little risk when using this program. The only real drawback is that it was made specifically for Windows XP, and so, it may not work as it’s supposed to on later versions of Windows.

Use Complete Internet Repair

Complete Internet Repair is another program that is capable of repairing the common issues that are capable of prohibiting the end user from accessing the internet. The things it is capable of doing are as follows:

  • Resetting and renewing internet connectivity
  • Flushing the DNS
  • Winsock Repair
  • Resetting Windows Firewall back to default
  • Repairing the Windows Update component
  • Fixing Internet Explorer
  • Restoring the HOST file

If you hover over the various features using your mouse, it will give you a brief description of what they repair. Using the multiple box solution, the user need only tick the box next to the repair they would like to use.

For the best possible results with this tool, it’s very important that you choose the correct repair solution, as you do not want the application to attempt to fix something that is not broken. As this could potentially lead to all knew problems for your system.

With that said, the best thing about this tool is that it was designed to work on all the latest operating systems.
