Indian Robotic startups selected to the finals of Landmine defusing challenge at ICRA, Sweden

Indian robotic startups selected to finals of Landmine defusing challenge at International Conference of Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2016. The team comprising of two startups from Kerala state, Sastra Robotics & QBotics Labs has reached the finals of Humanitarian Robotics and Automation Technology Challenge (HRATC).

The two sindian robotic startupstartupindian robotic startupss formed a team named Autobots, and is the leads in number of points.

It is a part of biggest and most prestigious robotics conference in the world organised by the IEEE. The International Conference of Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2016) brings together the brightest scientists and researchers working with cutting edge robotics, and is happening at Stockholm, Sweden from May 16th to 21st.

According to the ‘UN Mine Action Service’, landmines kill 15,000–20,000 people every year (mostly children). Minesweeping is iindian robotic startupsncredibly time-intensive and dangerous. Landmines left behind by soldiers continue to terrorize and destroy human lives long after wars. Landmine casualties themselves place an enormous burden on war stricken countries.

A mother killed or mutilated by a landmine places her entire family at risk of malnutrition and disease. A child mutilated by a landmine often becomes a burden on its family, health services and society in general.

The Humanitarian Robotics and Automation Technology Challenge (HRATC) is to find and defuse hidden unexploded landmines in an area, autonomously using a robot without human intervention.

Team Autobots, from Kerala is one among top 4 teams worldwide who made into the finals of the challenge and is the team with the leading score. The team comprises of expert engineers from Qbotics Labs, which specializes in robotics research and Sastra Robotics who specializes in robotic arms for testing of devices.

The members of the team are Lentin Joseph ( CEO/Founder, QBotics Labs) the team leader, Achu Wilson (CTO/Co-Founder, Sastra Robotics) and Chandykunju Alex(Robotics Engineer, Sastra Robotics).

The expert engineers from Qbotics lab and Sastra Robotics developed a complete solution to detect the presence and position of landmines using all terrain robot. The solution contains cover the areas of landmine deployed very efficiently and find the landmine very accurately without being exploded. The Robot was named Husky.

The main challenging part of landmine detection is to differentiate between landmine and the normal metal parts buried under the soil. There were many phases in the challenge which includes algorithm development, simulation and real world testing. The entire challenge is based on famous robotics platform called Robotics Operating System (ROS) and Gazebo Simulation software. The testing phase is the final phase and team Autobots leads with the top score.

A proud moment for Indian Robotics startup’s to get these kinds of international achievements.Let’s wish them all the best for the finals of the challenge! 👍

Update: They are the First Prize winners of ICRA. Congrats to Team Autobots- Sastra Robotics & QBotics Labs for this proud moment.
